Munich, February 24th, 2026 – Vyoma, a Munich-based company providing Space Domain Awareness (SDA) capabilities, has been selected as the winner of the ESA tender on ”Data Procurement for Space-Based Statistical Data on Small Space Debris Phase 1”. The contract is funded via ESA‘s Space Safety Programme (S2P) and covers bulk traffic data of the space environment, generated from the Vyoma Flamingo-1 satellite.

ESA’s Meteoroid And Space debris Terrestrial Environment Reference (MASTER) model provides a description of the space environment around Earth, supporting satellite designers, operators and other stakeholders with risk assessments. Currently, there exists a significant temporal and spatial knowledge gap for observations of space debris with sizes smaller than the detection limit of ground-based sensors. In this activity, ESA is acquiring data derived from space-based optical observations, with the objective of validating and improving the uncatalogued small-sized space debris population currently estimated by the MASTER model.

Vyoma, with its recently launched Flamingo-1 satellite, which is specifically designed and built to observe space objects in orbits from LEO to GEO, is ideally positioned to generate the optical image data ESA is seeking. Flying “in-situ” at an altitude of 510 km, Flamingo-1's instrument, with a large aperture and a wide field-of-view, is capable of monitoring large volumes of space at once. Crucially, this powerful sensor detects objects at long and short distances and thus captures even small and fast objects reliably, aiming to improve the data source the MASTER model is drawing from.

“Space situational awareness data generated from space-based observers like Flamingo-1 play an essential role in safeguarding current and planned satellites and contributes to a sustainable use of space around Earth”, says Dr Tim Flohrer, Head of ESA’s Space Debris Office.
“We are very pleased to welcome ESA, with its leading role in the field space sustainability, as an important key customer, and we are looking forward to supporting ESA in its mission to help satellite operators keep their assets safe”, adds Dr Stefan Frey, CEO of Vyoma.

Vyoma will launch further Flamingo satellites through 2026 to 2029 with the aim of providing low-latency observations of all satellites in Low Earth Orbit, enhancing sovereign Space Domain Awareness capabilities, and contributing to safe and secure satellite operations.
