Startup space winner Dr. Luisa Buinhas of Vyoma balances building tech and building her business

Dr. Luisa Buinhas, the grand prize winner of the 2022 Startup Space entrepreneur pitch competition, joins the latest edition of “On Orbit”. She is a co-founder of the German company Vyoma Space, which develops technology to reduce space debris. Buinhas oversees the growth of Vyoma’s space program in its goal to establish itself as a reliable partner in defending satellite operators and spacefaring nations from hazardous debris. Buinhas has a background in aerospace engineering and is a specialist in space mission design and manoeuver optimization.

Vyoma is building a constellation of satellites to track space debris that are equipped with optical cameras and sensor systems that allow for close-up observations of debris in space. Additionally, the satellites are equipped with a GNSS receiver that enables businesses to ascertain the orbit of observed space debris.


In this conversation, Dr. Buinhas and the host talk about Vyoma’s history as well as how its sophisticated software and algorithms function.
