Vyoma awarded two patents for space-based surveillance

  • The patents define an operational strategy for maximising imaging performance of an in-space optical sensor
  • The application of these patents enhance current Space Domain Awareness activities and secure assets in orbit
  • They also ensure Vyoma’s competitive lead in the nascent market of space-based intelligence

‍Munich, June 4th, 2025 - Vyoma is thrilled to announce that it has been granted two patents by the German Patent and Trademark Office (Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt or DPMA) for the company's proprietary concept of operations of on-orbit sensors for space surveillance. This marks an important step toward protecting its cutting-edge technology on a global level.

Whereas both patents describe the unique operational concept for surveillance, one of them focuses on an optimized orientation with active steering to maximize detections in the Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) regime, the second one adds image pre-processing steps onboard the spacecraft.

Vyoma will launch a constellation of 12 space telescopes into orbit, starting in fourth quarter of 2025. With the application of the patents in its mission, Vyoma not only observes centimetre-sized objects in LEO up to Geostationary Orbit (GEO) with a high frequency but importantly fills a data gap in Earth’s orbit. A great example of such inaccessible loci are the orbital polar and low-altitude equatorial regions. Currently, orbital polar regions are the most congested ones in terms of space traffic and the least observed by ground-based sensors.

"The two granted patents secure the operational concept for efficiently capturing space-based observation data. As a clear first mover in this emerging industry, in Europe, we see this as a critical step in securing and reinforcing our technological advantage," commented Christoph Bamann, COO and co-inventor. "These innovations enable us to generate comprehensive surveillance data from the very first satellite and deliver immediate value to our customers."

Vyoma’s advanced space-based surveillance system can accurately characterize the orbits of objects and detect emerging threats in space. Whereas the first patent was granted in December 2024 in Germany, the second patent was published in April 2025. Vyoma continues to pursue the protection of its intellectual developments in Europe and other international jurisdictions.

About Vyoma

Vyoma is a Munich-based company that leverages ground-based and soon, space-based data to empower automated satellite operations and deliver space intelligence to the industry. Officially founded in August 2020, Vyoma developed a suite of tools that enables efficient and scalable satellite operations in congested orbits around Earth, drastically reducing mission costs for its customers. On the space intelligence side, Vyoma detects close approaches between satellites and behavioural anomalies (e.g., manoeuvres and ill-intent), among others. Vyoma tenders to operators, reinsurers and space agencies. As a participant in the EU Commission and ESA programs for SDA technology development, Vyoma relies on a specialized workforce of 40+ engineers and scientists.
